Damek & Robotics

Santa brought Damek a Robotic Arm for christmas. Of course the first thing out of his mouth was "just like on the space station!". We haven't quite started putting it together as I decided to order the software/curriculum that was extra. I know Damek will want to read all that we can about the arm before, during and after putting it together. Damek's been drawn towards robots for over a year now, and we decided that it was time to get serious about it. When Damek has an interest, he's not content with just skimming the surface or with the dumbed down kids version of whatever he wants to learn about, that type of stuff just bores him and he loses interest fast. He likes to dive head first into very technical information and books written on an adult level. Of course he enjoys picture books as well, but for actual learning he wants the technical stuff, and much to my surprise, understands & retains a great deal of the information.

When Damek first expressed an interest in robots, we got him the Gears, Gears, Gears robot kit, which he had fun with for a little while (until the motor broke), but the very first time we put it together he said "how come it doesn't pick up stuff?" (it only goes forward and backwards). Soon after there was a robot exhibit at our local children's museum which he really liked. Of course the part he liked the most was where you get to control a robotic arm with a remote and have it pick up and move blocks. We really haven't expanded much until now because we really didn't quite know where to start. I've seen all the small robot kits out there, but knew that he wanted something that resembled a human. He has seen the robotic arms they use on the space station, and a month or so ago a friend and I were talking at the park about artificial arms and Damek was asking about the arms and why someone would have one and she mentioned that if someone got in an accident and their arm couldn't be saved or it had to be removed for some reason than they would use an artificial/robotic arm to which Damek replied "cool!" A woman in our local homeschoolers association mentioned starting a Lego Robotics club, which Damek is really excited about as well.

After Damek opened his robotic arm on christmas and Lee looked in the box at all the parts and wires, he said "looks like I need to take an engineering class so I can help Damek put this together" Although we both agree that this is one of the many things we love about homeschooling, we get to learn right alongside our children. Helping them pursue their passions and watching how excited they get about learning about the world. Life is good.

***Update (at 9:40pm). This evening we went over to the neighbors house, as Damek & Kyan's friend Jayme, who lives next door, had broken her arm over the weekend and really wanted some friends to keep her company. The boys made her a card and they picked out this fabric flower at the store that plays music along with some "get well soon" balloons, so we took those over and hung out for a bit. They played some games on their Wii system (Jayme played with her left hand), played some board games, ate a spaghetti dinner, and ended up watching the movie WALL-E, which Damek absolutely loved!

the doot doots and Mystery Mummsies

So anyway we have some imaginary creatures as of late called the doot doots in our house (care of Damek & Kyan). They are friends with and were introduced to us by Mystery Mummsies, which is another imaginary creature who made it's appearance soon after halloween.

Mystery Mummsies lives in the t.v. downstairs and can only come out when the t.v. is on. He get's blamed for most unfavorable goings on having to do with Damek or Kyan ("I didn't do it, Mystery Mummsies did it"). The doot doots only come out when Mystery Mummsies presses the button to let them out. They chase you into the bedroom and you have to get under the covers, "into the darkness" as Kyan tells us, so they won't grab you, if they grab you, then you die (temporarily) but if you stay under the covers long enough they die (temporarily).

Damek told me that if you put invisible solution on yourself then you can go through the doot doots. Even if they sense you are there and try to charge you then they just go right through you.

Gotta go!! The doot doots are out!!

Thought I would throw out an update before Christmas. The boys are still sick:( Coughs & sinus stuff mostly, and tonight Kyan coughed so much he threw up. Damek has a severe eye ache? He crashed out on grandmas couch at 7:30 (we were over painting the last of our handmade gifts in her basement). Hoping it's not a sinus infection.

I'm finishing up on a few other gifts and getting neighbor stuff ready for tomorrow (christmas cookies and some canned goods from the garden). Heading over to my moms tomorrow evening for Christmas eve for dinner and grandma gift giving. Then we will come home and put out snacks for Santa and his reindeer and hopefully sleep very soundly (without any coughing). We will hang out on Christmas morn here, open presents & have breakfast, then head to Oma and Opa's (Lee's parents) for lunch and gift exchanging, then back to my mom's in the evening for her annual Christmas party. I always look forward to seeing family friends whom we only see at Christmas and perhaps one other time throughout the year. Also looking forward to seeing what kind of home brew my brother-in-law Mike will bring this year (he is an award winning home brewer by the way). Of course the boys always love hanging out with their cousins on both sides, so it's a win win all the way around.

If I don't pop in before thursday hope you and yours have a wonderful and safe Christmas.

Wishing everyone a Happy Solstice!

We will most likely be lying low this year, not getting up early to watch the sun rise like we did last year. Both boys are, and have been for 3 days, now under the weather with fevers and coughs:( I'm crossing my fingers that Kyan will feel better today as didn't wake up once last night coughing:) Although Damek got whatever it is a day later than Kyan, so Damek probably won't be better until tomorrow or monday.

This evening I'm most likely going over to my mom's to get a couple gifts finished up for the boys where they won't be able see what I'm doing:)

Tomorrow the boys wanted to bake some solstice cookies and hand them out to the neighbors. We'll have to see how their feeling then.

Here comes the sun:)

today

-Damek put together his new Bionicle first thing this morning (first gift of the season from aunt Dawn, Uncle Mike, Carson, Hayden & Amaya), who is now by the way in our tree and guarding it. Nicknamed him 'Photok, Guardian Of The Tree' (specially from big puppies that try to grab ornaments off to use as chew toys!:))

-homemade blueberry muffins (from yesterday) for breakfast

-homemade loaf of whole wheat sandwich bread

-Toon Town (for Damek)

-load of laundry

-book 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas'

-JumpStart Preschool (for Kyan)

-wiped down baseboards

-lots of stamping for Kyan with our entire box of stamps

-hung apple cinnamon ornaments downstairs

-beginnings of gingerbread cookies(will roll out, cut out and bake tomorrow)

-checked out the following from the video store and will watch here and there until we have to return them on saturday: 'How The Grinch Stole Christmas', 'Mickey Mouse Saves Santa', 'Bee Movie', and 'Horton Hears A Who'.

-purchased Damek a much needed "gently used" Marker winter coat at Kid To Kid (a local children's thrift store) for a whopping $16!

-started on a few christmas gifts, and with Damek's help think we have them perfected

-two "new" books from the library 'Martian Rock' and 'My Full Moon Is Square', which are already big hits with Damek

-just finished watching 'Good Eats' (one of Lee, Damek & I's favorite food shows) with the subject being Baklava. Damek always has us pause the parts where a fact is thrown up on the screen relating to the food or ingredients being made, so we can read it to him. I have made Baklava once before and now have a sudden urge to go buy all the ingredients to make it again:)

the other day Kyan said he was going to draw a picture of our family, then he proceeded to ask me how each of our names are spelled and he wrote our names on a paper, writing each letter as I told him them in sequence.

of course the letters would not have been legible to you or I, but to him they were and he was very proud that he had written all of our names on this one piece of paper (he even included Echo).

if I find the paper (not sure where he put it), I will post a picture.

"Damek, you are my bestest brother ever!" Uttered by Kyan while giving Damek a big hug.

Kyan's been saying/doing this for quite some time now, and it always puts a smile on Damek's face. Sometimes Damek replies with "I'm your ONLY brother Kyan".

taking things slow

I feel like I missed a week.

Last friday I started having a toothache. Sunday night I had to take an over the counter painkiller before going to sleep. By morning had intense pain. Went to the dentist on tuesday. Got a prescription for an antibiotic and a more intense painkiller. Intense pain for 3 days (prescribed painkiller helped somewhat). Woke up thursday with a little less pain, but a cheek the size of a golfball. Woke up friday with a swollen hand and a slightly swollen right arm (same side that my toothache was on). Made an urgent call to the endodontist and went in later that day. Confirmed abscess. Got a root canal. Feeling much better:)

The week was spent doing lots of resting, ice packing, heat packing, lying down, sitting on the couch, & snuggling my babes. Also lots of connecting (amid the pain). I got lots of "make it better" hugs and kisses from all 3 of my boys, and Damek & Kyan were so patient and loving with me all week:)

I've been sort of stressing about missing a week because of all that I have left to do before solstice & christmas. I'll get done what I get done. Our family is much more peaceful and centered when we take things slow. Or should I say my family is much more peaceful when I take things slow. My family is peaceful when I am peaceful. My family is patient when I am patient. So these are the thoughts and actions that will guide me these next couple weeks. Peace. Patience. Joy.

All is well.
